about

Written over the last few years and recorded solely at home in various bedrooms around Leeds, 'Ask Mia' is an album trying to make sense of where we are right now, what matters, what to reject and the absurd roles we find ourselves playing out. Subjects covered include self policing, the lifecycle of ideas, surveillance and writing about love/loss whilst rejecting the standard romantic framework. This record basks in imperfections, unconventional scales and structures, with each song emerging from a collage built from it's own set of song writing rules, dictated by the feel of the sounds. Electronic drum kit, synths, accordions and home built electronics produce a pallet of guitars that sound like a swarm of bees, drums that range from polyrhythmic barbarity to robotic, bass that rumbles like a lawnmower and blips swirling overhead like digital Kites. Vocals challenge conventional pop music norms by running the gamut of full choral arrangements, atonal expressionism, clipped and spoken, jumping back into girl group backing band mode. Sonic jumping off points range from Snakefinger, The Flying Lizards, Haruomi Hosono and Laurie Anderson to Captain and Tennille, Danielle Dax, Robyn and Battlestar Gallactica.
